Xpu-Ha Beach – One of Our Favorite Beaches in the Riviera Maya
Xpu-Ha Beach is located just about 30 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, and 38 kilometers north of the town of Tulum. Nestled right between these two hotspots, this beach is often a little quieter than some of the bigger beaches up and down the Riviera Maya. It’s our favorite beach in the area to visit for a day, and we recommend checking it out!
Why We Love this Beach
Xpu-Ha beach is out of town from both Playa del Carmen and Tulum, making it a bit more remote than some of the bigger beaches around. It’s generally pretty active on the weekends, but you will find smaller crowds on weekdays and early in the morning. It usually doesn’t get crowded until after noon.
At Xpu-Ha, there are a few resorts and beach clubs, but most of the beach is quiet and empty. Unlike the beaches in Playa del Carmen and Tulum, you’ll find more solitude and peace. The waters are clear, the beach clubs are nice, and there are tons of options of things to do for all types of people.
Whether you want to sit in the sun and relax, swim in the beautiful water of the Riviera Maya, go snorkeling, ride a waverunner, or have a tequila with your friends, it really offers it all. It’s a great all-around beach with soft sand, shallow waters, and nice people.
Entrance Fees and Costs
As of October 2018, the entrance fee is 50 pesos per person to the beach. If you spend over 200 pesos per person at the beach club, you can get your entrance fee reimbursed on the way out! Other than the entrance fee, you really don’t need to spend money here. You can bring a lunch, some snacks, and/or drinks.
If you don’t want to worry about all of this, there is a beach club at the end of the road when you get to the sand. Called La Playa, the club has a restaurant, a ton of options for tables and chairs, and little handycrafts. Lounge chairs run about 100 pesos a person, and are well worth it to stay out of the beating sun all day.
The food is reasonably priced for beach clubs. You’ll find Mexican dishes like guacamole, tacos, and tostadas, but also things like hamburgers and chicken fingers. Although it’s not the best food in the world, you certainly didn’t come to Xpu-Ha to have a gourmet meal. It’s good, we’ve never gotten sick from the food, and are always satisfied.
Other costs to factor in when visiting this beach may be activities. If you want to go out on a wave-runner, rent snorkeling equipment, or partake in one of the other activities offered, there will be additional costs. However, you can certainly have a fun and relaxing day without spending any additional coin! Mexico has some amazing beaches, and Xpu-Ha is no exception. You don’t need much to be happy here.
Services at Xpu-Ha
If you want to be active or try something new, there are many things you can do. Bahia Divers is located right on the beach, and offers SCUBA tours and training if you enjoy diving. There are also options to rent snorkeling gear to see the fish and possible turtles along the reef in the water.
There are also boats out on the water to take you on tours, including waverunners, fishing boats, and simple boat tours. You can ask the person working at the beach club to point you in the right direction, and remember that pesos are the preferred method of payment!
Basic services are not a problem here. There’s a restroom, restaurant, smoking areas, a shop to buy sunscreen and necessities, and lounge chairs.
Getting to Xpu Ha
Xpu-Ha beach takes some effort to get to, but you can do so pretty easily. If you’re in Playa del Carmen or Tulum, you can get in a colectivo and ask to be dropped right at the entrance. To learn more about the colectivos, you can read our post about getting from Playa del Carmen to Tulum at https://therivieramaya.org/playa-del-carmen-to-tulum/.
You can also take a taxi from Playa or Tulum. Colectivos will run about 40 pesos a person, and a taxi from either town will cost about 250-300 pesos each way. Colectivos are much cheaper in general, especially for small groups. On the way out, you can get a passing colectivo quickly by standing at the entrance.
