Staying Healthy in Playa del Carmen
Whether you’re moving to Playa or coming for vacation, you’ll notice a town of physically fit people. However, you may also notice the party-oriented atmosphere, especially catered toward tourists. Being in Playa, it’s important to know there’s more than may meet the eye.
From the beautiful beaches to the streets of town, there are places and resources to take care of yourself. Here, we’ll list a few ways you can stay healthy and take care of yourself while in town.
Mental Health in Playa
First, let’s talk about mental health. Often stigmatized, it’s helpful to know there are options to receive help in the area. There are English-speaking therapists living right in Playa, fully licensed in the United States. For the best English-speaking psychotherapist in Playa del Carmen, visit www.PlayaTherapy.com. You can also find online recovery coaches through Shifts Coaching at https://shifts.coach/coaches/recovery-coaches/.
Fitness and Gyms
Physical health and working out can do wonders for mental health and feeling well. There are a ton of ways to be active in Playa. You can go on one of the many tours, spend time outside at the beach, or just walk around town. For one of our favorite beaches, read about Xpu-Ha at https://therivieramaya.org/xpu-ha/.
There are also many gyms in Playa. There is Bit Fitness in Playacar, Crossfit Impetus, and Evolve Gym with multiple locations. It’s a bit pricy (comparable to US gym prices), but a great way to meet like-minded people and get your health on.
Food and Nutrition
The food in Playa del Carmen may not seem to be healthy right off the bat. Endless tacos and ice cream everywhere aren’t exactly health food (although they may be good for the soul). There are tons of healthy options and delicious restaurants for when you need a break. Health food stores can be found on 5th Avenue and the nearby 10th Avenue. There’s an awesome fresh fruit stand on 10th and 2nd, and if you look around you can find everything from protein powders and kombuchas to fresh vegetables and fruit. I also recommend cooking for yourself. Check out our favorite Mexican cookbooks in our recent article at https://therivieramaya.org/best-mexican-cookbooks/.
Spirituality in Playa
You may want to take care of yourself spiritually while in Playa. Lucky for you, there are many opportunities to do so. There are yoga studios, healing centers, and much more. Our two favorite yoga studios are Yoga District and YogaLoft. There’s also Life Synergy offering retreats with meditation, yoga, and much more. Finally, a local Playa resident leads online meditation and mindfulness groups open to beginners at Class.OneMindDharma.com.
Whatever route you take and however long you’re in town, be sure to take care of yourself!
