Favorite Places: Purobeach Rooftop Pool
We recently spent some time at the Purobeach “beach club” in Playa del Carmen, and absolutely loved it. Although it’s called a beach club, Purobeach is actually up on 10th Avenue at Calle 2, a few blocks from the actual ocean. It sits atop the Fives Hotel, just a block from 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. We had a great experience, so here’s the lowdown on this beach club.
The Basics
Purobeach operates a few clubs across the world, mainly in Europe. Their location in Playa del Carmen is their first in the Americas, with other locations in Spain and Portugal. Like many other beach clubs and pools in the area, there’s no direct fee to use their location. However, there is a minimum consumption charge. This is an amount each individual must spend over their time there on drinks and food. There are many amazing things to do in Playa del Carmen, and this is something worth checking out.
When we visited, the minumum consumption was $700 pesos a person for the lounge chairs. However, the bigger beds and chairs run a little bit more. This isn’t hard to hit if you’re drinking or plan on having a meal here. The food is definitely tourist-priced and expensive for Mexico, but on the more affordable side. Entrees during lunch run from 150 to 300 pesos, with options like the lobster costing more.
The pool, like other rooftop pools in Playa, is relatively small and shallow. At about 1.5 meters deep (4.5 feet or so), it’s the perfect depth to stand and chill in. The pool is L-shaped, with great views from basically everywhere in the water. You can see up and down the coast, the town bustling below, and out to the island of Cozumel.
There’s a full bar, music, and a restaurant to sit and eat at. You can also have your food in your chair right at the pool overlooking the Caribbean waters. When we were there, the music was pretty consistently bumping techno music, which was personally a slight downside for us. However, it wasn’t too loud (as it often is at other rooftop pools), and was relatively mellow electronic music. Definitely not overwhelming or a dealbreaker for this beautiful spot!
Our Time at Purobeach
We got to Purobeach about thirty minutes after they opened via a recommendation. It was completely empty when we arrived, and we were able to choose the chair we wanted. We took a taxi down to the center of Playa del Carmen with ease, just asking for The Fives Hotel. We settled, enjoyed the view for a bit, and ordered a few breakfast smoothies. The drinks were fresh and delicious at a decent price.
We hung out in the pool for a while, took a nap on the super comfortable chairs, and ordered some appetizers. We had tuna crisps and a wonderful salad. As you may know, a lot of the food in the area centers on the meat and fish, so it was refreshing to eat some great greens. The tuna crisps were delicious, and super well-presented as well. We ate, relaxed, and enjoyed the beautiful views of the Caribbean and Cozumel.
As we continued to hang out and eat, we just had a relaxing and perfect day. The staff was friendly, the other people at the club were great poolmates, and it was an overall fantastic day. We’ve been to quite a few pools in Playa del Carmen, and this one was the perfect blend. It filled up and was active, but never got too crazy or loud during the day we were there. The service was great and food was delicious, but it wasn’t insanely overpriced. When we left, we knew we’d be back soon!
Recommendations
If you want to hang out at a pool in Playa del Carmen, definitely consider checking out the Purobeach rooftop pool at the Fives Hotel! Get there early, as it seriously filled up. People that arrived in the afternoon still got chairs, but not ones right on the pool with the beautiful view. Also, if you go earlier, you should have no problem meeting the minimum consumption. Make sure to wear your sunscreen and bring your sunglasses!
